How to turn on your Sony Ericsson feature phone to 3G mode only

Sometimes, you needs only 3G mode on your phone. Sadly, previous Sony Ericsson features phones lack this mode.
For those who own SE feature phones with only “GSM only” and “GSM/3G” or “Auto” mode, you must realize that your phone lack the “3G Only” or “UMTS Only” mode you can find on most newer SE phones and smartphones. Do not worry! We have a way to drive your Sony Ericsson phone to 3G only mode and it won’t switch automatically anymore.
So why do you need 3G only and not the “Auto” mode. Because you only need 3G and it is fast to surf internet than the darn 2G!
Usually, 2G signal is always better and, if compared to 3G, you phone would always choose 2G as the signal is stronger. But it’s painfully slow using 2G internet, and for my carrier in Cambodia, Smart, it is just plain dead for internet in 2G. Yet, you still cannot figure out where you can turn on 3G mode only.

Things you will need:
- a Sony Ericsson phone
- a Windows PC (already works with Sony Ericsson phone. If not, read further)
- Cable or Bluetooth or anything that get your phone communicate with your PC
- MyPhoneExplorer (read further for download link)

Here’s how:

I assume you have your Sony Ericsson worked with you PC first. I mean you Sony Ericsson PC Companion can find your phone. If not, you can download drivers for your phone as in my previous blog and make it work first.
Then download the free MyPhoneExplorer here. MyPhoneExplorer is a freeware from an open group. It is an application that can get your phone and your computer work together like charm. You can even sync your contact and do loads of things else with it. Since it is freeware, you do not have to pay anything for it. But if you like it, consider some donation to the developers. FYI, I’m not a developer and not even have any affiliation with them.
Once downloaded, install it. The installation is fast and you do not need to restart your PC.
In our case, I will demonstrate using my K660. The procedure is still same in all devices.
1- Plug cable to your phone and your PC, or turn on both computer and phone Bluetooth or anything else you think they can communicate between.
2- Start MyPhoneExplorer
3- The first time you use it, it will tell you how you can get MyPhoneExplorer communicate with your phone. If you want to do it manually, press “F2” on your keyboard or “File” and “Setting” menu. In “Connection” in the left list highlighted, press “Search for device”. Once it get connected, it will starts syncing your phone. Wait until it’s done.
4- On the left bar, navigate down, so then you will see “Profile” under “Other” group (just right under Files). So click “Profile”
5- On the bottom, you will see “Edge only”, “Edge and 3G”, “3G only”. Check “3G Only” and “Okay”.
3G
6- Done. Your phone will always stick to your 3G even if you unplug the cable.

REMEMBER:
If you restart your phone, “3G Mode” will be gone so you will have to do it from step 1 (and of course, you need PC) again.
If you want to switch back to “2G only”, so you only have to go through your phone setting (and you don’t need PC to do). In your phone, go to “Menu” then “Setting” and navigate right to “Connectivity” tab, then “Mobile Network” then “GSM/3G Mode” and choose “GSM Only”. There will be a slight difference in phone configuration between Sony Ericsson phones, so you can find this setting yourself or refer to users’ guide.
Enjoy!
